AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FLAG DAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2006
On behalf of the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party I take great pleasure in
again supporting the National Flag Association in its efforts to encourage the
flying of our flag and to inculcate a respect for the flag and understanding of
the values it represents.
The “Stars and Crosses” of our flag are recognised around the world as being
symbolic of a free people, of a people who look out for each other and step
forward to assist others in times of need.
The Australian flag is our banner in those countries who are our near
neighbours, and where we have defence force staff, police and public
servants and others, offering succour and support because they have asked
for our help.
On this Australian National Flag Day I encourage all Australians to see our
flag as an emblem of our unification and inclusiveness, and as an icon for
tolerance, care and concern for other Australians and for people everywhere.
