Mount Gravatt Showgrounds
1644 Logan Road, Mt Gravatt
10am
You and your friends and other supporters are cordially invited to join the
celebrations for our flag’s 105th “birthday” on Australian National Flag Day –
3 September.
(This day was officially proclaimed ten years ago to commemorate the day in
1901 on which the Australian national flag was first flown.)
Please note that because of construction work in King George Square, the event
is being held this year at the Mount Gravatt Showgrounds, 1644 Logan Road,
Mount Gravatt. We are delighted that our flag raising ceremony at 10am will
commence the official opening for the 5th Biennial Family & Local History
Fair, which is being held that day at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds.
This year we are fortunate indeed that the flag raising ceremony will be
performed by a contingent from Australia's Federation Guard, which provides
elite ceremonial guards both within Australia and Internationally. (It is the
first unit in Australia's military history that has been formed exclusively
for ceremonial duties, and is an Tri-Service organisation made up of Navy,
Army and Air Force members.). The Federation Guard is called upon to
participate in the ceremonial welcoming of foreign dignitaries to Australia
and to provide ceremonial support for Australian civil and military events,
such as the opening of Federal and State Parliaments, opening of Royal shows,
State Funerals and military parades.
We are also honoured to announce that Her Excellency the Governor of
Queensland, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, will be our special guest at this year’s
ceremony.
After the formalities conclude (no later than 11am) you will be welcome to
visit the many displays and exhibits that are part of the History Fair, which
is being run by History Queensland Inc (formerly the Queensland Association of
Local and Family History Societies). Your association will be running an ANFA
stand as one of over fifty stalls that will showcase all aspects of history,
with special displays and guest speakers from sponsors such as the Australian
War Memorial, the National Archives, and the State Archives. Further details
about the Fair can be found at www.qalfhs.org.au.
The Mount Gravatt Showgrounds are located on Logan Road near the intersection
with Broadwater Road, and can be reached from the City by public transport
using buses on Route 174 - Garden City 174 , Route 170 - Mt Gravatt / Newnham
Rd Express 170 , Route 175 - Garden City 175 , or Route 184 - Garden City 184 .
There is no need to reply or record an acceptance to attend the flag raising
ceremony at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds on 3 September – all are welcome.
