AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FLAG DAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2005

The Australian Flag is a powerful symbol of our nation. The Federal Parliamentary Labour Party respects and defends the Australian Flag as the banner under which we are represented across the world as independent and democratic people.

My colleagues in the Labour Party join with me to encourage all citizens, whether at school, at their workplace or at home, to fly the flag and recognise it as emblematic of our diverse culture and our commitment to a tolerant, open and free society. Flying and celebrating the flag indicates our honour and pride in being Australian.

On this Australian National Flag Day, 104 years after it first flew, we should remind ourselves that it is the symbol of the nation's unity as it represents all the citizens of Australia - of whatever race, language, belief or opinion.
