19 August 2005 MESSAGE FOR AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FLAG DAY 2005
It is my great pleasure to extend my best wishes to all Australians on the 10th
Australian National Flag Day, celebrating the 104th anniversary of our foremost
national symbol.
The Australian National Flag was the product of a design competition announced
after Federation in 1901, which attracted 32,823 entries from around the world.
Throughout Australia’s history, the flag has been identified by Australians as a
symbol of our unity, and has come to be associated with the multicultural, free
and democratic society that is our nation. It reflects a confidence that Australians
can form a cohesive national community notwithstanding our diverse
backgrounds.
I am delighted to offer my support on this day of national celebration, and I
encourage all students and the public to display and honour our flag of ‘Stars and
Crosses’, and to reflect on the rich heritage of the Australian people.
Yours sincerely
JOHN BROGDEN MP |
